Intercommunication

The most efficient groups have their communication down to a well-choreographed dance. The goal is to get information communicated with proper timing, effort and intention. Concerns can be brought up and solutions discussed. Good communication in workgroups can help projects from getting larger than originally projected due to changes, add-ons and fixes. Communication also avoids duplication of efforts with intended results being in scope and on point. Projects just run more smoothly because problems can be resolved more quickly with improved transparency.

So we see how communication within a group benefits forward momentum with less problems and glitches, benefitting the bottom line. In order to keep a workgroup communicating well, it is a good idea for everyone to keep emotions in check. Try to consider how the tone and the words one is using will be interpreted when speaking. Staying focused when group discussions are occurring using mindfulness, or being fully attentive during discussions. Forward momentum can become sidetracked through interruptions and distracted attention.

In order for the entire group to get from point A to B in a meeting, there needs to be agreement that everyone needs to feel safe to speak. A dominant speaker, or someone with emotions flaring that uses blame, criticism and judgment can cause a more conscientious speaker to withhold their contribution, which may have been that missing piece of the puzzle. In order to let less competitive speakers become influencers, everyone needs to be mindful that others may have something to contribute or build on what has already been stated. Airspace belongs to everyone.

Believe it or not, if you focus on listening predominantly with your right ear, it mainly processes in the left side of the brain, which handles, among other things, speech comprehension. Try it.

Groups that develop a flow to their communication raise the level of cohesiveness. Participants can land their message effectively without feeling the need to overpower others. With elevated communication, the whole group levels up. It can be an amazing experience when a group is operating in synergy, and creativity expands exponentially.
