Always wanted a tree carving. So when I decided I was done with pulling out the gazillions of baby trees all throughout our property from one very prolific Golden Rain tree, I wanted to turn it into art. I loved the tree, I really did, but it is on the exotic invasive species
list for good reason. I thought it would be out of my budget but when I spoke to Brad at BDH Custom Chain Saw Carving, I knew this project was meant to be. We cut the tree off at about 6-8 feet high and cut logs and mulched branches ourselves. Looking at the trunk, it was rather narrow so I thought of an owl. Brad had no problem matching the type of owl I chose and incorporated the tree’s knots into the design. It was fascinating to watch the whole creation process. In less than 2 hours, we had a new family member. We named him Owlfonz.
When he finished carving, he took a torch and added some contrast to the contours. Amazing detail appeared in the feathers. Brad recommended that we wait until the wood dried enough to see some cracks and then seal it with CWF Natural Tone Clear sealant. That took about 3 months. Here’s a little video of the progression of the project. If you want to see more of Brad’s work, you can check out his website here.
The 4th of July is a big holiday here at the lake, so we decided Owlfonz would like to be dressed for the occasion.
