Plarn (plastic yarn) Bags

One of the coolest things I came across during our RV travels belonged to a lady from Canada.  She had a bag purse made from plastic grocery bags.  I put it on my mental list of things I must create.

Simply, one starts by cutting a plastic bag in one continuous strip.  I incorporate the handles, but others like to cut them off, as it makes a smoother bag.  Ends of bags get knotted together and get crocheted in as you go.  Thin flimsy plastic bags may not work as they tend to snap with the pull of working stitches.  Thank goodness, bags are not hard to come by, and are not hard to collect from friends, family and neighbors.   Numerous patterns can be found here.  I just kind of freestyled by starting with a magic circle and turning it into an oval and then squaring off the corners.  Kind of a challenge but fun while binge watching an old favorite show.  Once you have a satisfactory bottom footprint, then do a row in back loops only and just spiral around making the sides.  Chain some handles attach and go back and forth until they are strong.  Done!

This is my bumble bee berry picking bag that just happens to fit a small stack of empty cottage cheese containers. I can hang the bag on my arm so I can work with two hands.  Once you get used to working the tension of the plastic and have a pattern you like, then the fun begins.  Have fun with the colors and express your creativity.  These bags end up being amazingly strong and soft on fruit and veggies.  And you can feel good about your grocery bags which are as special and unique as you are.
