When considering what he would paint for the 2024 Archibald Contest, artist Shaun Gladwell asked himself “What would scientific journalism look like as a portrait?”
There’s an incredible story behind this stirring portrait of Julian Assange, a finalist entry in the 2024 Archibald Art Contest. Assange, an award winning Journalist and historical figure had to be sketched with a chocolate bar on British paper money. The rules of the Archibald requires that the subject must be sitting for the artist, but Artist Shaun Gladwell wasn’t allowed to take paper or pencil with him when he visited Julian Assange in Belmarsh prison in London. “I couldn’t think of anyone I wanted to paint more. I was honoured to paint him.” So they found a creative way adhere to both sets of rules by using a chocolate bar and paper money. Gladwell was a war photographer who spent time in Afghanistan, after Assange and WikiLeaks published the Afghan War Logs and the Collateral Murder Video, Gladwell and others like him were able to see the war from a realistic overview, aiding their ability to come to terms with their experiences. “[Assange] became the patron saint of war photojournalists because he showed what we would never have seen otherwise,” he says. “It changed my worldview.”

The Archibald, Wynne and Sulman Prizes 2024 exhibition runs June 8–September 8 at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. The Winners will be announced on June 7.

Nobel Peace Prize Winner Mairead Maguire’s Passionate Speech When Accepting GUE/NGL Prize on Behalf of Julian Assange
Watch Mairead’s passion during this speech. It’s profoundly heartfelt & genuine. In 2019, Nobel Peace Prize winner, Mairead Maguire, accepted the GUE/NGL Prize on behalf of Julian Assange. It is incredibly relevant today. In her acceptance speech, she stated, “Julian is the one to ask us to ask our conscience on the deepest level, ‘is this right or is this wrong? I am a human being and I look at a situation and say is this right or is this wrong, and can I do it. Julian Assange asked this question of himself and he came up with the answer, no, I cannot go along with these policies, I have to speak out.'” With what is going on in the world, her words are still echoing to our ears today.

Write to Congress to support Rep. Tlaib’s proposed Amendment 759 to the NDAA to Protect Journalists and Whistleblowers
Do you believe whistleblowers and journalists should not be prosecuted under the Espionage Act? Write to Congress right now and tell them to support Tlaib’s proposed amendment, Amendment to the Espionage act. It reins in abuse of the law against journalists & whistleblowers. It makes it much harder to prosecute national security whistleblowers from Ellsberg to Manning to Snowden to Hale (and everyone in between) under the Espionage Act, and would make it impossible to prosecute journalists or publishers like Julian Assange.

What Julian Assange and WikiLeaks published was important information that the public needed to know about war crimes committed by governments. It’s information that many feel the public has a right to know. The International Criminal Court (ICC) investigates and, where warranted, tries individuals charged with the most egregious crimes of concern to the international community: genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and the crime of aggression. There is a principle of International Law of the Nuremberg Principles that concerns war crimes. It’s principle 7 and it states that “Complicity in the commission of a crime against peace, a war crime, or a crime against humanity is a punishable offense.”
This can include:
~Aiding and abetting: Providing material support, resources, or assistance to those who commit crimes against peace, war crimes, or crimes against humanity.
~Encouraging or inciting: Encouraging or inciting others to commit crimes against peace, war crimes, or crimes against humanity.
~Concealing or covering up: Concealing or covering up the commission of crimes against peace, war crimes, or crimes against humanity.
To operationalize this principle, the following measures can be taken:
~Establishing clear definitions: Define what constitutes complicity in the commission of a crime against peace, war crime, or crime against humanity.
~Identifying complicit individuals: Identify individuals who have aided, abetted, encouraged, or incited the commission of such crimes.
~Investigating and prosecuting: Investigate and prosecute individuals found to be complicit in the commission of crimes against peace, war crimes, or crimes against humanity.
~Implementing sanctions: Implement sanctions against individuals and entities found to be complicit in the commission of such crimes.
~Promoting education and awareness: Promote education and awareness about the importance of preventing and prosecuting complicity in the commission of crimes against peace, war crimes, or crimes against humanity.
~By operationalizing Principle 7, it is possible to hold accountable those who aid, abet, or encourage the commission of crimes against peace, war crimes, or crimes against humanity, and to prevent such crimes from occurring in the future.
