Enchanted variety is the theme of Washington’s Olympic National Park. One can experience the ocean at sea level…
… and view Mount Olympus which stands at 9570 feet, adorned with many glaciers.
We first wondered why there was so much driftwood around.
Then we realized how crucially important logging was to the area. Forestry is highly managed here in the Olympic National Forest which surrounds and works closely with the National Park.
New trees are planted in the debris from harvested trees. The debris turns to mulch over the years and feeds the new forests, which will grow for 60 years before they are harvested again.
Fog and high moisture content in the air provide perfect conditions for trees to thrive.
This Red Cedar is ancient…
… and was a thrill to see and experience.
