Traveling up the eastern shore of Montana’s Flathead Lake yesterday from Missoula to Kalispell.

We passed numerous cherry orchards nestled between the mountains and the lake.
Here there are cherry festivals, pie and cobbler cook-offs, pick your own parties, even the crowning of a cherry queen.
We scored two pounds of Rainier cherries and a pound of huckleberries. Huckleberries are the state fruit of Idaho, but are highly popular in Montana. They only grow wild as it is almost impossible to domesticate them (although attempts are still being made). They are similar to a blueberry, but smaller. They have a taste similar to a blueberry but with a tart kick to them.
Huckleberry products are all over right now as Montana celebrates huckleberry season. Even in Walmart, huckleberry fans can buy tea, bread, jam, jelly, wine and lotions.
I made some homemade huckleberry biscuits this morning which we had with butter and honey. No wonder they drive the wild bears around here crazy… They were delicious!
Many thanks to friends Tom, Deb and Diane for the mouthwatering info used in this blog post. 😉

Huckleberry biscuits, sounds like heaven to me. Glad you got some along with the cherries. By to way if they are tart it's because they picked them too early usually because they wanted to get them before the bears.
