We’re staying in Quadna, MN, just west of Lake Superior this week.

Yesterday we visited Savannah River Portage State Park and learned about the history of the area.  In order for fur traders and settlers to get from The Great Lakes to the Mississippi River, they had to take a series of rivers and waterways.  Not all connected, so at those points, they carried their canoes and goods by hand along trails originally sketched out by Lewis and Clark.  Those historic trails are now protected and preserved.

So many lakes, created by volcanic and glacial action, give the Minnesota lake district the nickname, Land of a Thousand Lakes.  Beautiful pristine forests, prolific farm fields, log buildings, water recreation… Oh, and beautiful multi-colored rocks.
